Biodynamic

Stéphane Otheguy farms 1.5 hectares of vines in Côte Rôtie, Condrieu and Saint Joseph, that are leased from his mentor, Vincent Gasse. Under Vincent, in some of the most difficult viticultural terrain in France, Stéphane learned how to farm along organic and biodynamic principles. The terrain is steep and rocky, which is prohibitive for mechanical farming, consequently everything is farmed with a great deal of manual labor. He is a member of Nature et Progres, an organization that oversees and certifies organic farming.

Les Massales is produced from 50-60 year old vineyards in the lieu-dits Leyat and Bonevière. The vineyards are planted entirely to the pre-clonal selection of Syrah known locally as Sérine. The wines made from Sérine (which may actually be a different grape than Syrah) tend to be more aromatically complex and show more finesse than "regular" Syrah. Les Massales is rich yet fresh with bold black cherry and plum fruit, a concentrated spicy component and complex savory and mineral edge. A truly delicious and special wine.
