Description

From the depths of a Dorset country house cellar. Covered in dust/crud.
Through the very black glass it is just possible to see the level with a very strong torchlight at base of neck.

This is - as the label states - a bottling by Grants of St James. The black wax seal is cracked and revealing a section of the top of the cork. There is evidence of a very small and slight seepage, but this is hardly unexpected in a near 60 year old bottle.

"Now fully mature with a lovely translucence. Ethereal, delicate bouquet becoming rich and tangy. Still very sweet with a good length and aftertaste. High alcohol content and an exquisite crystallised violet end flavour. Score: 4 Stars" - Michael Broadbent

May have committed a bit of "infanticide" here. Decanted for 2 hours (and left a little overnight). Very clear light carmel color. Nose of Asian spices, cigar box and something floral I can't place. Delicate body, and even a bit feminine but a truly gorgeous glass of port. Definitely has the ability to remain in top form for many more years in the cellar. Glad to have a couple more left!

Harrod's Bottling. Clear light brown. Very tertiary nose, floral and earthy with hints of exotic spices and tea. Delicious flavours, tea, dried fruit and mineral. Very soft finish.

Given the age - outstanding. Quite delicate, but a perfect glass of old port. Bravo!

8/24/2015 - COFIDIS2 LIKES THIS WINE: 95 Points
Decanted about 3 hours. Soft and sweetly textured with loads of Christmas cake spices, cigar box, and dried fruit. The long similar finish didn't disappoint. A wonderful VP that is fully mature and on a good plateau where it should remain for many more years.
95 Points

Decanted 4 hours. I can't recall having this for about 4-5 years, if not longer. A sweet attractive nose of spices, leather, lavender, and dried cherries. The sweet palate still retains just a hint of fruit over laid with allspice, cigar tobacco, and some eucalyptus. A subtle and long finish caps off this fully mature Vintage Port. While I don't see this getting better from here, well stored bottles are on a nice plateau where they should stay for another 5-10 years before slowly sliding into a more tawny phase.
