Description

Pre World War II bottling of Louis XIII Cognac with full set plus two Louis XIII Baccarat glasses.

One of the rarest, over 75 year old bottlings of the most legendary and prestigious Cognacs in the world with unparalleled reputation synonymous with the finest spirit since its creation in 1874.
Blended from 1,200 different Eau de Vies that were aged 40-100years in oak and carefully curated by 3 generations of cellarmasters each was distilled from grapes grown in the Grande Champagne terroir - the most prestigious growing reagion in Cognac.

Very few Louis XIII decanter from the era before WWII are left and they are even rarer than 1950s/60s bottlings before the introduction of boxed packaging and the FLeur-de-Lys crystal stopper.
This bottle is in excellent condition for its age - there is a variety of hallmarks that are relevant:

1.
The decanter itself is unmarked (at the bottom) by the glass manufacturer and only marked (likely with acid etching) by Remy Martin.
Post WWII the Baccarat made decanters were all hallmarked and signed by Baccarat and later also Saint Louis, this was not the case before (however, Baccarat was most likely already used by Remy Martin for Louis XIII decanters before WWII).

2.
The original stopper that comes with it is the old "upside-down decanter " model.
This stopper design was used long until after WWII and represents a stylised version of the decanter standing upside-down.
Unlike the modern Fleur-de-Lys crystal stopper it is, like the decanter, hollow inside.
Irregularities and imperfections tend to reveal a stopper made rather before WWII than in the 60s or 70s.

3.
The decanter itself is closed with a normal cork instead of a separate cork stopper as modern Louis XIII decanters (important to note that a separate cork stopper should be used once opened, as corks of very vintage spirits tend to be fragile and unsuitable for regular usage).
Often the original foil-cover does not survive on very old models, but here it is intact incl. the the Remy-Martin Centaur embossed and applied on top!
Most of the paper collar is intact as well.

4.
The decanter comes with a 1938 Royal Banquet card (held at Versailles for King George VI), that is printed on both side in English and French and attached to the decanter with a tricolore ribbon.

5.
The decanter has a square label at the bottom that unfortunately is almost completely scuffed off here - this label would state the brand-name of the spirit and was square/rectangular until ca.1960 and semi-round afterwards.
The label did state "Grande Champagne - Very Old Age Unknown " - interestingly, Louis XIII was not called actually Louis XIII by Remy Martin until after the 1950s, but "Very old/Age Unknown resp. "Tres Vieux/Age Inconnue ")!

6.
There is a range of imperfections and irregularities in the crystal glass - while modern day Louis XIII decanter also handmade and mouth-blown by Baccarat, they tend to be more precisely finished than very old versions.
The Fleur-de-Lys imprints on the decanter tend to vary more in the direction they are pointing at, the edges tend to be or irregular thickness and the details are less pronounced - for instance the dotting around the applied Fleur-de-Lys on the decanter as well as the stopper are heavily faded.

Although the glass as well as ribbon etc. are in age typical condition (see images), it is in excellent condition overall with a great full level with with fairly small ullage.

In case this shall be treated rather as a drinkable piece than a collectible, two exclusive Louis XIII glasses from my collection (made by Baccarat) come with it.
These cost 250£ each to purchase (they are of course modern items and not from the same period as the decanter).

Cheers!
