Description

FOR SALE: ONE BOTTLE OF 1947 CHATEAU PETRUS

Sold in superb cellar condition for its age, with the label, level and capsule all intact and with signs commensurate with excellent cellar storage only; this very rare and esteemed bottle has been very well looked after for the 60 years of its life.

I purchased this bottle a few months ago from a dealer in Belgium who has been charged with emptying and selling off a very old French cellar for the dependents of an old woman who recently died. Her husband died some years before and it was he who built up the collection of Petrus, Latour a Pomerol, Cheval Blanc, Lafleur and d'Yquem, all from vintages from 1918 to 1961. The dependents, who have no interest in the collection, requested that it be sold off in its entirety. The entire collection resided in a cellar in perfect conditions throughout its life and was never moved. I have been told it is almost certain that this bottle has lain untouched and unmoved since release. Please see the pictures for evidence of condition of this bottle.

1947 was an exceptional year for Pomerol and Bordeaux in general. Tasting notes for the 1947 Petrus as follows:

BOB:

100 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
January 1998
The 1947 Petrus is the most decadent "wine of the century." While not as port-like as the 1947 Cheval Blanc, it is a massive, unctuously-textured, viscous wine with amazing power, richness, and sweet fruit. The nose explodes from the glass, offering jammy fruit, smoke, and buttery caramel scents. The wine's viscosity is reminiscent of 10-W-40 motor oil. It is so sweet, thick, and rich one suspects a spoon could stand upright. The wine is loaded with dream-like quantities of fruit, as well as high alcohol, but there is no noticeable tannin. While drinkable now, given its amazing fruit extract, and high levels of glycerin and alcohol, it is capable of lasting two more decades. Tasted 11 Times With Consistent Notes.

WINE SPECTATOR:

Issue: Feb 15, 1991
Score: 97
A rich, massive wine, with opulent aromas and flavors of bitter chocolate, vanilla and earth, an extremely silky mouthfeel and an underlying ripeness of fruit that spellbinds.--Pétrus vertical. Drink

CELLARTRACKER:

Community Tasting Notes (average 99 pts. and median of 99 pts. in 2 notes)

Vintage Tastings, Assorted Notes from THE CELLAR (10/11/2006)
(Petrus) was superlative, a ‘classic.’ The wine was beautiful with incredible breed and aromas of mocha, plum, cassis and bread crusts. The mouth feel was superrich and velvety, and the flavors were full of sugarplums, vanilla, olives and earth. It was Pomerol bliss, and the length and balance were near-perfect 99+ points

The suggested dealer value of this wine appearsto fluctuate wildly - almost certainly due to bottling and condition. Prices suggest somewhere between £2,500 - £6,500 ex VAT. I have set a reserve for this bottle that is extremely fair, given the rarity, condition and prestige of this bottle.

The bottle will be sent very securely packaged and fully insured on receipt of cleared funds. Alternatively, collection in person would also be welcome. As would any inspection prior to bidding. I would be happy to send any pictures to you too - in case you wished to see the bottle in greater clarity.

Please ask me any questions you have. Please also see my other bottles for sale - including bottles of Petrus from 1945, 1950 and 1961; all in similarly excellent condition.
