Description

I'm having a clear out of my vinosafe to make way for new purchases, so I'll be listing a fair bit over the next few weeks.

This auction is for one bottle of Chateau St Georges 1934.

UK bottling by Hatch, Mansfield & Co. Ltd, 5 Pall Mall East, London.

I'm really struggling to find any tasting notes , although 1934 was generally considered the most decent 30's vintage for Bordeaux.

In the words of Michael Broadbent:

Best of teh decade. Good abundent early harvest. Decidedly over-developed and risky now, though if well cellared can be delicious. If 33's are like will hung pheasant, 34's are like gamey grouse.

Well pheasant season is almost over...

Clive Coates does provide a bit of general guidance on the wines of the Chateau:

The setting here is aristocratic. The magnificent chateau, designed by Victor Louis and constructed in 1770, is fronted by a large formal garden. This garden would not be out of place in the Loire Valley. It is somewhat invongruous to find it here in one of the lesser outlying areas of Bordeaux. The vineyard, enclosed within a brick wall, is by far the largest in the appellation (at 50ha - that's some wall!). Though harvesting is by machine (now - probably not in 1934!!), 50 per cent new oak is used for aging, This is a rich, succulent wine which ages well.
