Description

A unique opportunity to possibly purchase three (yes three - but all listed individually) magnums of Chateau Haut Brion 1926.

Left to right (in main picture) are bottles A, B and C.

TO AVOID ANY DOUBT THIS LISTING IS FOR THE BOTTLE ON THE LEFT.

You will note that all three bottles are the tradition Bordeaux 'shape' - Haut Brion only started using the current shape in 1958.

You will also see that bottles A and B are slightly 'bent' (I would confirm that the middle bottle doesn't have a particularlt flas base_

I'm not going to ramble on here, as I always make a number of typing errors, and you will, of course, do your own research if interested.

However, a few tasting notes:

Robert Parker

Wine Advocate # 95 Oct 1994 97pts Drink: 1994 - 2024

The 1926 vintage, one of the best years in the decade of the twenties, has always been overlooked in favour of the 1921, 1928, and 1929. Reputed to be one of the great wines of the vintage, the 1926 Haut-Brion is unusual in its roasted, chocolaty, sweet, dense, thick style. It reveals an impressive deep colour with some orange at the edge and a huge nose of tobacco, mint, chocolate, grilled nuts, and smoked duck. Full-bodied and powerful, with amazing thickness and unctuosity, but extremely tannic and rustic, this atypical Haut-Brion will last for another 20-30 years.

Michael Broadbent Vintage Wine Companion

The best Haut Brion until we reach the '45. Noted in different contexts and sizes; bottle, magnum, and jeroboam. Its nose and taste very distinctive, totally unlike the 1er cru Medocs. Most recently, still almost opaque; harmonious, rich nose; fairly sweet, full flavoured, powerful.

Last tasted September 2000 *****

Serena Sutcliffe (Sotheby's Hong Kong Convention Auction April 2009)

Haut Brion is the connoisseur's First Growth, sumptuous, soft, elegant and fine, so come-hither you sink into it. The hidden depths in its velvet folds of flavour are a revelation, with the extraordinary Cohiba notes leading to a spicy, constantly intriguing taste. With age, Haut Brion simply melts in the mouth, while in youth it is delicious before the other Firsts emerge from the chrysalis. This is the classiest, finest-textured wine from Pessac-Leognan, with its unique, almost "peaty" flavours.

Chateau Haut Brion's own notes:

A VERY GOOD YEAR The wine has aged remarkably well. It still has some fruit, but the dominant is its Haut-Brion character almost too pronounced with hints of caramel and liquorice.

A slightly hard, matured taste blends at the finish with the scents of mushrooms and flowers.

Date of the harvest: 4th to 11th October.

Current vintage notes

Magnificent overall results, though the harvest was small and prices thus very high. A sound year everywhere. The wines are powerful and of good colour. A trace of hardness should disappear with age. The best: Ausone, Haut-Brion, Lafite.

Comparative pricing:

Wine-searcher £5,643 In Bond per magnum (approx £6,800)

Sotheby's auction, from which the above Sutcliffe notes taken, resulted in a sale price of 42,350HK$ (equivalent to approximately £3,400) at the height of the recession!

Confirmation of this can be found at http://www.sothebys.com/app/live/lot/LotDetail.jsp?lot_id=4QN46 where you will note that the bottle sold showed 'slight signs of seepage'.

This is absolutely not the case with any of the three magnums for sale, each of which is currently safely stored in my Vinosafe.

Additional, larger photos are of course available via email.
