Description

1949 was consider a classic champagne vintage with Michael Broadbent giving the year as a whole 4 stars.

I am delighted to be offering this rare bottle of 1949 Vintage Bollinger (the Renaudin name was dropped in the 60's).

The second label show's Bollinger's continued appointment to the UK Royal family and confirms that this bottle was released some time after 1952 (i.e. after Queen Elizabeth's coronation)

Bollinger's own website declares the 1949 vintage as follows:

A DIFFICULT YEAR WITH A HAPPY ENDING

Average budding that was hit by hail, difficult and long (3 weeks) flowering due to cold weather. Considerable millerandage. Very hot and dry summer interspersed with violent storms. Harvest started on 19th September. Heavy rains led to severe attack of rot.

After sorting, the yield was 4,500 kg/ha.

This wine has good balance of alcohol and acidity.

This would appear to agree with the general consensus for 1949 Champagne as the following tasting notes (sourced from blogauvin) illustrate:

The first bubbly had an unbelievable nose. It gave elegance a whole new meaning with its pure, clear and clean personality. Seductive aromas of straw, hay, nut, yeast, white fruits and vanilla were intoxicating. Long and “so good,’ there were loads of vanilla flavors to this thick yet agile 1949 Pommery. (97)

The 1949 Dom Perignon was more advanced than the Pommery, more wine-like but still with some petillance and delicious in its own right. There was more texture and a sense of grandeur, but this bottle was already in a graceful declining stage. It might have been the bottle, or it might be ‘49 DP in general. I guess I will have to have it again. Good thing I know Rob! Back to the DP-it was rich, saucy and almost soupy, sweet and delicious in its “On Golden Pond’ way (95).
