Description

I would think the purchaser of this 6 bottle selection will either have been born in 1952
or will be aiming for a 70th celebration in 2022 (or both !)

Some excellent bottles here :

- CLARET 5 bottles

Chateau Ausone 1er Grand Cru Classe St Emilion - ms (WS £345 negociant bottling then £470 + tax in each case)

Cellartracker :

4/13/2020 - WILLIAM KELLEY LIKES THIS WINE:93 Points
The 1952 Château Ausone is showing superbly, offering up a kaleidoscopic and fully mature bouquet of griotte cherries and plums mingled with caramelized orange rind, warm spices, tobacco, candle wax and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, layered and satiny, it s incisive but enveloping, with built around melting tannins and lively acids, and concluding with a long, intensely sapid finish which—along with the wine s exotic aromatics—is its defining characteristic.

11/20/2019 - JEFF LEVE WROTE:95 Points
Young wines should never taste old. And old wines, when they are great, should retain some youthful characteristics. At close to 70, this light red, bricky hued beauty showed all the best aspects of tertiary and olfactory development/ Yet, there was still a fabulous array of earth, tobacco, and stony red fruits to enjoy. The tannins have melted away with age. The remaining fruits offered lift, freshness and sweetness in the finish. We were lucky this bottle was so good, as that s not always the case with wines of this age. But when old wines hit, that s when the magic happens!

Chateau Lynch Bages Pauillac / RP 91 - ms (WS £315 + tax)

Robert M. Parker :
This is a superlative wine. Such consistent brilliance was not again evident until the succession of super performances that began in 1982.

Chateau Gazin Pomerol - in (WS £200+)

Cellartracker :

7/11/2019 - KEITH LEVENBERG LIKES THIS WINE:93 Points
Rarely seen vintage on account of the fact that the Right Bank excelled back when nobody was drinking Right Bank. I actually preferred this a notch to the 55 vintage a few of us had a year ago from the same cellar. Fill on this bottle was low/mid shoulder at best, but the color is a deep, luminous ruby with just the barest bricking at the edges and it s obviously in fine shape. On the first sip it s actually a bit backwards, gently herbal with the structural frames bolder than the fruit, but it fleshes out nicely, first with the fruit freshening up while retaining its structure and reddish complexion, then with the fruit turning blacker and fleshing out enough to cover the frame and leave a smooth, suave spherical impression and a polish you wouldn t have thought it capable of from that first taste. The interesting non-fruit elements of the flavor mostly come out on the back end, which features some black truffle and nuttiness. Food in particular did a lot to draw more personality out of this, which is what gave it the edge in my book over the more sweetly fruited but simpler 55.

Chateau Rausan Segla Margaux - vhs (WS £350)

from "an impressive vertical of Rauzan Ségla and Canon by Taillevent" Sept 2007
"The Rauzan-Ségla 1952 has also a nose with signs of evolution and a lot of charm. The taste is male, evokes meat and game, and is wonderful with food. This is a wine that I like particularly."

Chateau Batailley Pauillac - ms (WS £220+)

NyGiants : Château Batailley, Pauillac 1952
Very surprising wine with a fairly obvious nose of undergrowth, redcurrant and fourure.

The palate is fine and elegant, supported by an acidity present but not dominant. I am surprised by the surprisingly fruity character of this wine.

A great surprise!

- RED BURGUNDY

Bonnes Mares Pierre Ponnelle - 5 cm

The Ponnelles are an old Burgundy family that have been producing Burgundy wines through many generations, back into the 19th century. According to Allen Meadows, Georges Roumier made and possibly bottled wines for them around this time. From Clive Coates: "The company of Pierre Ponnelle, founded around 1885, was sold to Jean-Claude Boisset in 1984, and its important vineyard is today part of the Domaine de la Vougeraie." (The Wines of Burgundy, pg 214) This Pinot Noir is one from the history books, for those Burgundy fanatics who must try everything once!

The famous Bélorgey estate :-

A quite substantial part of the Roumier holdings in Bonnes Mares came from the Bélorgey estate. In 1952, Joseph Clair (of Clair Daü), Jean Ponnelle (of Pierre Ponnelle a large negociant) and Georges Roumier acquired and shared large holdings of Bonnes Mares from the Bélorgey estate. Jean-Marie Roumier was later married to Odile Ponnelle of the Ponnelle family – so the relations to the Ponnelle family was to form the future of the Roumier estate in more than one sense.

(you could hardly want better connections, sandwiched between Clair-Dau and Roumier !)
