Description

Chateau Pape Clement, Grand Cru Classe 2013.

Taken from my private cellar, where the wine has been carefully laid down to mature.

Drinking beautifully now but will cellar well moving forward.

This will be a real treat for Christmas 2021

Critic notes:

A blend 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot picked from the 3 October to 5 October, matured in 60% new oak and the remainder one-year old, this has a fragrant floral bouquet that has fine definition and vigour for the vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition. This is quite elegant in the mouth with a decent fresh quite classic finish (13% alcohol). This Pape-Clement is very fine for the vintage - one of the best in the appellation.

Score: 91/93 Neal Martin, RobertParker.com, April 2014

Owner Bernard Magrez has made serious investments here since the late 1990 s and recent vintages have been outstanding thanks to extremely low yields, labour-intensive sorting of grapes and modern wine-making techniques. Prices are moving up at Pape Clément but so is the quality, which bears no relation at all to the weedy wines of the early 1980 s and before. The 42 hectares are planted with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot but this year the blend is 60% Cabernets and 40% Merlot. Deep purple in appearance. An exotically perfumed nose of cassis and intesely creamy vanilla. The palate is fleshy and ripe, with silky tannins enveloped by spicy oak and a core of black fruit and milk chocolate. The finish is sweet and ripe with exotic fruit and wood smoke.
