Description

Vintage quality: Legendary

Current condition: Ready to drink

Piedmont enjoyed an exceptional 1985 vintage.

The year began with an extremely cold winter. Cool, crisp temperatures and snowfall prevailed throughout much of March and April. May brought more heat but rainstorms slowed down vine growth. June heralded a hot summer and the good conditions continued up until the harvest, only broken briefly by welcome rain in both August and September. Strong diurnal temperature variation helped retain the grapes’ fruit character and acidity and the harvest was picked early. The resulting yield was both large and of exceptional quality.
In the winery, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Aging varies depending on the cuvée: the Riserva Rüncot matures in French oak barriques for two years, and then another two years in bottle, while the Gavarina Chiniera and Ginestra Casa Maté wines are aged in more traditional 2500-liter Slavonian oak barrels. Barrel cellars have been cut into the rock, which allows precise temperature regulation.
It was also a year where many younger producers chose to experiment more with techniques and the vintage is often touted as the first modern vintage of Piedmont with outstanding results. The vintage highlights included outstanding Barolos.

Given the very nature of Barolo and some Barbaresco predisposes them to long-term aging, it’s fairly safe to say that there will be a number of very good wines still drinking well today. They may just come with a corresponding price tag
