Even if one manages to come across a bottle of white burgundy of an old vintage it is virtually impossible to judge what it was like in its early days. As with pre-phylloxera claret, if they are remarkably good
now - for their age - they must have been even better in their youth and heyday.
The condition of old vintages is risky and they do not drink like their modern counterparts. Expect the wine to be deeper in colour, preferably a glowing yellow gold with a sweet honeyed bottle age bouquet; also sweeter on the palate and more substantial.
Old wines can be delicious. Provenance - cold cellars - are all important - and the state of the cork. 1949 was very good **** vintage. Michael Broadbent.
