Château Gruaud Larose is situated in the commune of Saint Julien and was ranked a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification.
The estate was created in 1725 by Joseph Stanislas Gruaud and remained as one property until the 19th Century when it was divided into two parts following different branches of the Larose family. The Cordier family, already owners of Château Talbot, acquired the part known as Gruaud-Larose-Sarget in 1917 and eventually purchased the second part, Gruaud-Larose-Faure, in 1935. The estate was sold to conglomerate Alcatel-Alsthom in 1993 who then sold to Jean Merlaut of Taillan Group in 1997.
Gruaud Larose’s extensive vineyards cover some 82 hectares at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare with an average age of 46 years. Cabernet Sauvignon (61%), Merlot (29%), Cabernet Franc (7%) and Petit Verdot (3%) are planted on fine gravel soils measuring up to 5 metres deep in areas of the Saint Julien plateau. The ‘grand vin’ represents 45% of production with the remainder destined for the highly regarded second wine, Sarget de Gruaud Larose.
Farmed organically since 2019, the hand-picked harvest is followed by rigorous fruit selection. Vinification takes place in 50% wooden and 50% cement vats and the wine aged for 18 to 24 months in up to 80% new oak barrels. Renowned for its tannic structure and ageing potential, Château Gruaud Larose softens and develops charm over time while Sarget de Gruaud Larose is more accessible in its youth.
Under Technical Director Virginie Salette, formerly of Château Ducru Beaucaillou, the estate is converting to biodynamic principles across its entire vineyard area.
The Merlaut family, through their Taillan Group, also have interests in Classed Growths Château Haut-Bages Libéral in Pauillac and Château Ferrière in Margaux among a portfolio of wine estates.
