Chateau d'Issan is a castle and winery in the Margaux appellation of the Bordeaux region of France. The wine produced here was classified as one of fourteen Troisiemes Crus (Third Growths) in the historic Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855.
The estate’s history dates back to the 12th century when the wine was officially served at the wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine to King Henry II, the beginning of a special relationship between Bordeaux and England. The d’Essenault family owned the estate over five generations and rebuilt the existing château at the end of the 16th century. Surrounded by a moat, it is one of the oldest châteaux in the region and is frequently described as the most romantic in the Médoc.
The winery is under the proprietorship of Emmanuel Cruse, of the Cruse family. In February 2013, 50% of the estate was purchased by Jacky Lorenzetti, who also owns Chateau Pedesclaux in Pauillac & Chateau Lilian Ladouys in Saint-Estphe.
The vineyard abuts other Margaux chateaux, including Chateau Palmer and Chateau Margaux itself, in separate lots totalling 44 hectares. The grape varieties cultivated are 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot. The grand vin has an average annual production of 8000 cases and spends between 16 and 18 months in oak, 50% of which is new. Chateau d'Issan also makes a second wine under the label Blason d'Issan.
