Overview

This property was partitioned off from the Labergorce estate back in 1795 - it produced far superior wine than Labergorce and was one of the best Cru Bourgeois properties in the Medoc.

There awere 28 hectares of vineyards, located on gravel-rich soils at Soussans near Margaux - many of the vines around 50 years old. The estate was purchased in 1979 by the Thienpoint family of Le Pin fame and manager Luc Thienpoint propelled it into the top rank of Cru Bourgeois estates.

The wine was a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (35%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and Petit Verdot (5%) matured in oak barriques (50% new) for 18 months. The wine is rich, concentrated and exquisitely well-balanced.

Chateau Labegorce Zede disappeared from the 2009 vintage. It became part of Chateau Labegorce to create a single 55ha estate. This had been the intention of the late Hubert Perrodo founder of the Perenco oil group who bought Labegorce in 1989, then its neighbours Chateau de l'Abbe Gorsse 2002, and Labegorce Zede in 2005. The three had been combined before the French Revolution, and split into separate properties in the ensuing centuries, they are combined once again.
