Overview

Château Léoville Las Cases is in the Saint Julien appellation of the Médoc and has become one of the most popular Second Growths as ranked in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification.

Steeped in history, the estate can trace its origins to the 17th Century. Once part of the extensive ‘Domaine de Léoville’, it was owned by the Marquis de Las Cases at the time of the French Revolution and subsequently divided into two estates, creating Léoville Las Cases and Léoville Barton, then later into a third, forming Léoville Poyferré. The Delon family acquired the property in 1900 and still manage the estate under the stewardship of Jean-Hubert Delon.

Léoville Las Cases retained the heart of the original domain, known as the Clos, from where the grapes are sourced for the ‘grand vin’. Situated on deep gravel soils with excellent drainage, the ‘terroir’ of Léoville Las Cases rivals that of its Pauillac neighbour, Château Latour.

The estate covers 98 hectares planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon (67%), followed by Merlot (23%) and Cabernet Franc (10%). The vineyard is managed without the use of herbicides or pesticides. The ‘Grand Vin’ represents 45% of production while the second wine, Le Petit Lion, launched in 2007, is made from younger vines from the Clos.

The Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant Léoville Las Cases has legendary ageing potential and is considered by insiders as a First Growth in all but name. After spending 18-20 months in oak barrels of which up to 90% are new each year, this wine becomes complex and elegant whilst displaying huge concentration and power.

Clos du Marquis is a separate wine first released in the 1902 vintage and regarded as one of the most successful and consistent second labels. Since the 2015 vintage, Clos du Marquis has a second wine of its own, La Petite Marquise.

The family business, Domaines Delon, also owns Château Potensac in the Médoc and Château Nénin in Pomerol.
