Overview

Château Rauzan-Ségla is one of the oldest and most renowned estates in the appellation of Margaux and was ranked a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification.

Rauzan-Ségla has changed ownership numerous times since the 1800s when the immense Rauzan estate was divided, forming Château Rauzan-Gassies, Château Desmirail, Château Marquis de Terme and Château Rauzan-Ségla.

Several generations of the Cruse family owned the estate in the first half of the 20th Century and eventually, in 1994, the estate was acquired by the owners of Chanel who brought in two key figures from Château Latour – David Orr and John Kolasa. The label also reverted to the spelling of Rauzan with a ‘z’ at this time.

The estate’s 70 hectares of vineyards are planted with 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and the remainder Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot at a vine density ranging between 6,600 and 10,000 per hectare. The ‘grand vin’ is produced from vines grown on clay-rich gravel. Ségla, the second wine of Château Rauzan-Ségla, represents 55% of production. Since 2018, the entire estate is farmed organically.

Chanel have made significant investments in both the winery and vineyards and these improvements continue today, with Nicolas Audebert of Mendoza’s Cheval des Andes fame joining as winemaker in 2014. Château Canon in Saint-Emilion also belongs to Chanel.
