Overview

Château Cos d’Estournel is a Second Growth in the commune of Saint Estèphe that sits on plateau opposite its Pauillac neighbour, Château Lafite.

Louis Gaspard d’Estournel founded the estate in 1791 and expanded the vineyard from its original 14 hectares to 45 hectares. He was also responsible for the Asian-inspired architecture that makes Cos d’Estournel a unique landmark in the Médoc. During the 19th Century, the estate changed ownership several times and from 1919 to 1998, it passed through the hands of the Ginestet then the Prats families. Current owner Michel Reybier acquired the estate in 2000 and has made huge investments in both vineyard and winery, including plot-by-plot vine management and gravity-fed vinification, supervised by Technical Director Dominique Arangoïts.

Today, the 100-hectare estate has 87 hectares under vine divided between Cabernet Sauvignon (56%), Merlot (40%), Cabernet Franc (4%) and Petit Verdot (1%). Soils are gravel over clay subsoils that provide excellent drainage and growing conditions for quality fruit. The ‘grand vin’ represents 60% of production with the remainder destined for the second label, Les Pagodes de Cos, launched in 1994 with a higher percentage of Merlot in the blend and 10% from younger vines. The proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in the ‘grand vin’ is typically around 75% producing wines of great depth and richness that are slow to develop their full complexity. The ‘grand vin’ is usually aged for 14 months in new oak while the second wine sees 12 months’ ageing.

The estate launched a white wine, Cos d’Estournel Blanc, in 2005. The blend is typically 66% Sauvignon Blanc and 34% Semillon.  A second white wine has been bottled under the Pagodes de Cos Blanc label since the 2018 vintage with a higher proportion (90%) of Sauvignon Blanc.

Michel Reybier also owns Château Pomys in Saint Estèphe, which was part of the original Cos estate, among other wineries in France and abroad.
