Overview

Chateau Croizet Bages is a winery in the Pauillac appellation of the Bordeaux region of France. The wine produced here was classified as one of eighteen Cinquimes Crus (Fifth Growths) in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855.

One former owner of Croizet-Bages was the American Jean-Baptiste Monnot, son of Jean Ferreol Monnot, creator of the Klaxon horn (as well as being a successful miner of gold, silver and copper). Owners Anne Francoise Qui and Jean Philippe Qui, who took over from their father Jean-Michel at the estate in 2001, are twins. The family has three Medoc estates that are all 30 hectares.

The original chateau building for Croizet-Bages was built in 1875 along the quays of Pauillac, away from the vines (as is true for Grand-Puy-Ducasse and Duhart-Milon) but it was sold to the town, leaving this estate without the focal point of a grand building. The former chateau is now the Maison de la Culture de Pauillac.

The 30 hectare Medoc vineyard of Croizet Bages is planted to 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc. This shows a slight increase in the amount of Merlot in the vineyards. On average, the vines are close to 35 years of age. The vineyard has a terroir of gravel and sand soil on the Bages plateau. Yields can be higher here than at most other classified, Pauillac estates as they are on average 55 hectolitres per hectare at Chateau Croizet Bages. Something else to consider, 50% of the Croizet Bages vineyard is harvested by machine. The wine of Croizet Bages is vinified in traditional cement vats. Malolactic fermentation takes place in tank. Prior to 1994, no new oak was used to age the wine. That is not the case today as now, the wine is aged in 25% new, French oak barrels for 12 months.

There is a second wine, La Chartreuse de Croizet Bages, which represents 20% of their output.
