Overview

Chateau Sociando-Mallet is an unclassed Bordeaux wine producer from the appellation Haut-Medoc.

The winery is located on the Left Bank of the Bordeaux wine regions, in the commune of Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne north of Saint-Estephe.

Despite its highly proven reputation as a producer of Cru Classe quality wine, it was neither ranked in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855 (not existing at the time), nor is it listed among the Medoc's Cru Bourgeois, due to a decision by its owner Jean Gautreau not to enter it for the classification.

The vineyards, which lie close to the Gironde Estuary are on one of the best gravel outcrops in the Medoc, and planted with Cabernet Sauvignon 40%, Merlot 55%, Cabernet Franc 5%. Planted at. density of 8,333 vines/ha at an average age of 35 years. The grapes are hand picked and then fermented in a combination of stainless steel and concrete tanks. The wines are matured in oak barriques 90% new for 12-15 months. They are bottled unfined and unfiltered.

These are weighty, firm and well structured clarets that are typically rich in fruit and have excellent ageing potential. As the late Jean Gautreau said: "I have a superb terroir which I want to express in the wine. I try to make a classic Medoc for long keeping." His daughter Sylvie Gautreau is now running the property

The winery also produces a second wine named La Demoiselle de Sociando-Mallet.

Acclaimed vintages worth tasting include the 1996, 2000 and 2005.
