FOR SALE - ONE BOTTLE OF 1964 CHATEAU LA GAFFELIERE ST EMILION 1er GRAND CRU CLASSE
Sold in excellent condition, this bottle has spent nearly all its life in its original wooden case in a French cellar. The level and capsule are excellent. The label is very good - with a small nick in it as you can see from the pictures.
From the excellent 1964 vintage, having been well looked after, it should still be drinking very well. An inexpensive chance to sample a very fine top growth St Emilion from a very good year.
I initially had 4 of these and decided to treat myself to one a couple of weeks ago. When first opened, I tasted it immediately and found it closed and relatively thin as expected. I then decanted it for a little over 3 hours - with the first two hours with the opening of the decanter covered and the final hour uncovered. After this, the wine had indeed opened up. It was then drunk over the next 3 hours or so, allowing further oxidation to take place. There was still a good level of fruit to accompany the expected earthiness; and the tannins that were evidently there some time ago had softened a great deal. The colour also changed from a fairly transparent ruby to quite an opaque claret. It was a very enjoyable wine. As I said in my description above - a very inexpensive opportunity to sample a top growth from an excellent vintage.
This bottle will be packaged securely and sent fully insured on receipt of cleared funds. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
