One bottle each of three superb wines:
Pontet Canet 1996
Wine Advocate # 122
Apr 1999 Robert Parker 92 Drink: 2010 - 2035
I was shocked by how backward the 1996 Pontet-Canet was on the three occasions I tasted it in January. This wine possesses superb potential, but it appears a decade's worth of patience will be necessary. The color is a saturated dark purple. With coaxing, the wine offers aromas of black currant jam intertwined with minerals, sweet oak, and spice. A full-bodied wine, it possesses layered, concentrated, sweet fruit, with an elevated level of ripe tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2035.

Neal Martin 88 Drink -
First tasted en primeur with positive notes during 2000 and 2003. Tasted again at the chateau in October 2003 with consistent notes. Then at Farr's blind horizontal. A deep broody, blackberry and cedar nose. Touch of bacon fat. Good definition. Quite opulent but not garish. The palate is tannic, powerful, high extraction and concentration. Muscular. A lot of new oak with a huge grip on the finish. perhaps lacking subtlety and seems quite a bit of alcohol on the meaty finish. But well-crafted and will need some time.
Leoville Barton 1996
Wine Advocate # 122
Apr 1999 Robert Parker 92 Drink: 2007 - 2030
This impressive wine is a classic. Although backward, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color in addition to abundant black currant fruit intertwined with spicy oak and truffle-like scents. The wine is brilliantly made, full-bodied, and tightly-structured with plenty of muscle and outstanding concentration and purity. It should turn out to be a long-lived Leoville Barton, and somewhat of a sleeper. However, patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2030.

Nov 2008 Neal Martin 91 Drink 2008 - 2018
A very deep garnet core. A quintessential Saint Julien nose: blackberry, touch of sous-bois, mocha and a light brushing of roasted herbs (thyme.) The palate is full-bodied, very sweet core, almost dare I say too sweet with a slight cassis/fig element that seems incongruous both to Leoville Barton and the style of the vintage. Harmonious, very fine tannins but I would have liked to have seen more reserve and breeding. Impressive nose/perplexing palate. Drink now-2018 Tasted July 2008.
Haut-Bailly 2001 Pessac Leognan
Wine Advocate # 153
Jun 2004 Robert Parker 90 Drink: 2004 - 2018
The deep ruby/purple-tinged 2001 Haut-Bailly reveals sweet, pure, elegant aromas of currants, toast, and cigar smoke. With wonderful sweetness, fine tannins, a delicate, nuanced personality, and a long, persistent finish, this well-made, impressive Pessac-Leognan will provide plenty of pleasure over the next 12-14 years.

Sep 2009 Neal Martin 92 Drink 2011 - 2025
Tasted at the Fine Wine Experience vertical in London. There is a surprising amount of ripeness on the nose; blueberries, touches of cassis, less minerally than the 2004. With aeration there is just a hint of crushed stones and dried autumn leaves. The palate is very well balanced, good acidity, vibrant and with the same sense of poise as the 2005. Pure blackberry, cedar and tobacco, this is a classically lined Haut Bailly with great precision if admittedly not length on the tar and spice-tinged finish. This is a great wine, one that makes you wonder why you shelled out so much for First Growths? This has consolidated its position as one of the great 2001s. Drink 2011-2025. Tasted March 2009.
