Sold in excellent condition for its age, this is bottle of 1970 Bollinger RD which was disgorged on 15th September 1978 and released in 1979; Bollinger's 150th anniversary year.
Bollinger RD like Perignon's Oenotheque and Krug's Collection undergoes extended ageing on the lees (a minimum of 8 years in the case of RD) and is marketed as the house's top champagne.
This vintage is now extremely rare to find and indeed, looking worldwide on Wine Searcher, it is not available anywhere (prices for 1969 and 1973 RD being being £700+ and £450+ respectively ex VAT).
Bollinger's website describes 1970 as follows:
The first harvest of the century, in terms of volume; exceptional budding for all grape varieties. Vegetal growth began slowly then temperatures increased leading to flowering at the normal time in the best conditions. Ideal weather allowed good ripening of the bunches.
The yields were at 13,800kg/ha, given the load, the harvest had to wait until 27th September. Despite record yields, which took the champenois be surprise (it was necessary to hire barges on the river Marne to stock the wine) the quality is remarkable: balanced, round and full of finesse.
