1 bottle of extremely rare Bollinger Grande Annee 1979, in exceptional condition for age.
Classified by Bollinger as a late harvest "vendanges tardives".
After a cold winter and a cool, damp spring, budbreak was late. Rabbits caused considerable damage in the vines, as did chlorosis in water-logged soils.
June saw magnificent weather which helped flowering. August was very hot with several violent storms. Attacks by worms and rot were noticeable.
The fine weather encouraged perfect, healthy ripening of the grapes. The harvest was late, beginning between 3rd and 5th October.
Good balance of alcohol and acidity at 9g/l.
Yields were at 11,061 kg/ha.
The '79 vintage is fine, balanced and very elegant.
Tasting Notes, by Serena Sutcliffe, M.W. (Institute of Masters of Wine) for Sotheby's in January 2009:
"Vanillin / acacia lanolin bouquet. Pinot Noir from Ay predominates in the "bready" taste. Hazelnuts turning to walnuts on the finish - rather a 1979 characteristic."
No listing currently on wine-searcher.com, but best estimate of retail price from 90plusratedwine.com is £260 a bottle.
Reserve is less than half this amount.
