Description

Two bottles from the original three bottle wooden case.
Both are in perfect condition in every respect.
There appear to be no offers of this wine elsewhere in Britain, and a few in New York priced at £117 plus tax and delivery, so...

This very serious wine enjoys many excellent reviews three of which are reproduced hereunder.

From the producer's website:
"The From extensive slopes on the right margin of the Duero river we obtain the grapes from Pago de Sanchomartin vineyard, in Pesquera de Duero. Grapes which are used exclusively to cultivate this Malleolus with its marked temperament. The vineyard was planted in 1964, using grafted buds from the oldest vineyards. The wine is then aged for 22 months in French oak".

An intense, deep cherry-red colour. Complex and elegant aromas, with subtle, floral notes that accompany the liquorice, mulberry and blackcurrant. The balsamic notes from the oak are perfectly integrated into the ensemble of the wine. On the palette it is warm and sweet, with balanced acidity and a great quality tannin that caresses the palate.
A warm finish that goes on forever.

Wine Advocate #189
Jun 2010 Jay S Miller 96 Drink: 2016 - 2028 $190
The 2003 Malleolus de Sanchomartin is a bit more evolved in color. It is more harmonious than the 2003 Valderramiro and quite complete. Give it another 6-8 years and drink it through 2028.

Wine Advocate #166
Aug 2006 Robert M. Parker, Jr. 93+ Drink: 2006 - 2016
The dark ruby/purple-colored 2003 Malleolus de Sancho Martin emerges from a vineyard planted in 1964 on limestone and clay soils. It was aged for 22 months in 100% new French oak. Neither as powerful nor muscular as its predecessors, it is an elegant, polished effort displaying a Pinot Noir-like sensitivity. Notes of sweet cherries, cranberries, and boysenberries intermixed with graphite and smoked herbs are found in this lush, impressive cuvee. It should drink well for a decade.

95 points Wine Spectator
Espresso and bitter chocolate oak flavours dominate this powerful red now, but there's a core of ripe, deep blackberry and currant fruit and an underlying mineral backbone that promises complexity will come with time. Very elegant for such power. Best after 2007. (12/ 2006)
