Description

An exceedingly rare bottle in excellent condition.

As per photos with a good level at base of neck, a date stamped capsule in good order and a complete label.

Until recently lying in the underground cellar of an elderly gentleman in East Sussex who had been the owner "since before I can remember - probably my father's".

From the d'Yquem website:
'It was cold and wet until September, then warm, then very dry. The harvest began quite late, and two passes brought in beautiful, rich grapes from the 4th to the 22nd of October before 50 mm of rain fell. Fruit picked during the last three passes did not reach 20° potential alcohol. This late-ripening, difficult vintage was nevertheless generous and vivacious'.

Château d'Yquem 1954 is a classic. very elegant with aromas of sherry, brown sugar and caramel and a taste of hazelnuts. Voluminous and deep.

"A delicate Yquem .. with bitter- and mandarin orange and lemon notes. Of medium body, with a nicely rounded palate and a good finish." Wine Spectator (May 1999)

A similar bottle is proposed by Fine & Rare at £814 VAT = £976. My starting price is but 10% of that....
