Description

Lafite 1955, so rare. 60 years old next year.

The same wine via WineSearcher starts at £500 plus VAT (£600) and then you have to buy 12 bottles from the same supplier...
The next one is at £800 (+ Vat = a grand...)
My reserve is a fraction of all that.

The level is as per the photo. The label is 99% complete and entirely readable - see photo. Some recent comments from Neal Martin below.

Tasted at “The Sampler” icon tasting in London. The 1955 Lafite-Rothschild is a wine that I have not encountered for several years. Here is has a mellow nose of cedar, graphite, redcurrant, sous-bois and hint of signature Pauillac mint. It is certainly well defined and very classic in style: understated and “serious”. The palate is medium-bodied with bone-dry, could you say almost ossified tannins – very foursquare and perhaps a little faded compared to a few years ago. But it remains a quintessential classic Pauillac that is fresh and elegant – an old dame to use the common vernacular. Tasted December 2012.

A touch lighter in colour compared to the Saint Juliens. The nose is a little herbaceous with notes of tobacco, cigar box and cedar: archetypal English gentleman's claret, the "softest" of the three Pauillac 55's. The palate is beautifully balanced with filigree tannins. Tobacco and dried herbs, seamless tannins. Herbaceous finish with pronounced tobacco, chestnut and a touch of cooked meats. A lovely wine and a great Lafite, this bottle superior to the 1949. A lovely effortless wine (again.) Tasted November 2005.
