Description

A bottle from the legendary 1961 vintage.

This bottle has a very good and complete label, a level commensurate with age - see main photo- and a good embossed capsule showing no signs of seepage.

Shamefully nicked from the internet -Cadman Fine Wines Ltd - who are offering a similar bottle at £260 inc. VAT - the cheapest currently visible.

"Château Cos d'Estournel’s 1961 is an increasingly rare chance to taste a stunning Saint-Estèphe from one of the greatest Bordeaux vintages of the 20th century.

Sited on a gravelly ridge, overlooking the Pauillac-Saint-Estèphe border and looking down on the vineyards of Château Lafite Rothschild, Cos d’Estournel (resplendent in an oriental facade carved from soft golden sandstone) is a fitting monument to its wines.

Cos d'Estournel (Cos being a hill of pebbles) produces more elegant and less angular Saint-Estèphe than its Bordeaux neighbours, due largely to a relatively high percentage of Merlot in its blends".

Reviews..

"...some intensity there with lovely cherry compote, peppermint and violets. Very well-balanced on the palate with fine tannins. Good delineation and freshness (enfin) with a fleshiness engendered by the ripe Merlot. Very smooth, not amazing complex but a lovely Saint Estephe that is at its peak now. A sumptuous, pretty 1961 and a lovely wine." eRobertParker.com

"...red-berried fruits, hedgerow, cigar box and a touch of tomatoe! The palate is impressive with succulent black fruits, spice, leather and raisin. Very harmonious and focused, a testament to the longevity of this estate. There remains a core of ripe wild strawberry and raspberry with a tantalizing prickle on the finish. Very crisp and with superb definition, this is a great Cos d’Estournel." eRobertParker.com
