Description

1962 was a very good vintage,but undeservedly overlooked.Though generally lean,the wines are elegant and stylish.Very good with food.
Seven notes on the 1962 Cos D'Estournel in the 1980s,all very good,including a deep,lovely,extraordinarily fragrant,soft and fleshy Justerini & Brooks bottling.Last noted September 1987.

Michael Broadbent. (Michael Broadbent's Vintage Wine Book.Volume 2).


This is a typical St.Estephe in the sense that,the wines from this commune are generally described as being hard and unyielding.Nevertheless,all the components are there,the dark ruby color,the very good concentration and weight,and the moderate tannin. Last tasted, December 1983.

Two recent tasting comments on CellarTracker:-

"Wonderful surprise.Dense cork fully intact,that released a wine of extraordinary elegance.Signs of age,but not a problem for a wine built to age.Wonderful nose,refined fruit,but full and lengthy finish,a treat from a bottle I regarded as gone.'62 just never know".

"The cork looked ancient,but it came right out,and was moist and intact.Decanted and poured,drank over 90 minutes.Shockingly youthful,ruby red in the glass,with orange and brown at the rim.Nose of cherries,tobacco,saddle,mushrooms,and pine cones.A little bit of fruit left,but mostly secondary on the palate,with sour cherry,tobacco,forest floor,and a little strawberry-rhubarb.Long finish,with a little tannin unresolved.Built to last".
(93 Points).
