"6/4/2009 - BRADKNYC WROTE:
Dinner for a visiting Jonathan Loesberg. (Il Corso): From an original bottle with an original cork. Some mustiness on the nose which is fairly typical of old Chenin. Indeed those not so familiar with Chenin Blanc might've argued it was a defective bottle, but it was just Chenin being Chenin. Honeyed, but not all that sweet. Indeed it had a richer mouthfeel than the '57 demi-Sec, but was not all that much sweeter. Dessicated apricot, nuts and earl grey tea notes with a bit of bitterness on the finish. With air, however, the bitterness dissipated and the wine took on a beautiful marzipan character with a bit of orange marmalade. The mouthfeel also seemed to grow richer and more harmonious. Lovely wine and maybe a shade better showing than a bottle I opened in January in Paris. A-.

6/4/2009 - SALIL WROTE: 94 Points
Bright gold colour - deeper than the 57 - with a slight old-wool mustiness on the nose amidst aromas of honey, apricot, marzipan, baked apple and some spice. Rich, intense and still very youthful in the mouth (not showing any of the mustiness apparent on the nose) with bright pear, apple and apricot fruit flavours mingled with honey, herbs and a slight waxiness to both the flavours and texture. Finishes very long."

"When Victor Huet’s son Gaston trudged 200 miles back to Vouvray, France, after the WWII liberation, he found his father’s vineyard in devastation. Gaston healed himself, healed the vines and went on to create the most famous domaine in that cave-carved, limestone-rich region. Grapes grown here are not the sémillon of the more famous (and expensive) Bordeaux, but chenin blanc. 1964 turned out to be a small vintage, spectacular for sweeter wines, which chenin freaks snapped up. Most are now sleeping in collectors’ cellars, occasionally popping up at auction for US$650 a bottle. This bottle was named for Le Mont, a 17-acre parcel clinging to the slopes of the Loire river. These are stony soils with little clay. The resulting wines have a bracing acidity and ample fruit, a combination that makes them almost indestructible. One drinker described the treat as having the smell of cleanscrubbed skin, sandy earth, stone fruit and raw almonds, with the aroma of marzipan. In other words, a classic, old, complete, mouthwatering Huet. — Alice Feiring, WSJ Magazine
