Description

This is an almost perfect bottle having been cellared in a damp but cool cellar all its life. The label shows a stain (see photo) but is complete as is the pristine capsule. Level is 'base of neck', good for 45 years in bottle.

Popped and poured from a pristine bottle. Color was remarkable- just the tiniest tinge of orange around the edge.

Immediate aromas of earth, paraffin/varnish and tart cherries. The bottle was a little cold (it was pulled to replace another which was madeirized), so it's hard to say if it evolved in the glass or if it was just warming up, but over the course of an hour or so we got whiffs of candlewax, saddle leather, forest floor, tomato leaves, wood/teak, wet paint and toffee chocolate- a bewitching aroma.

The palate was pretty thin at first, but filled out as the bottle warmed up. The tannins were still in evidence- pretty fierce and pretty dry, hence the wines longevity presumably, and the finish was around 30 seconds.

Enough of the description. This wine was incredible given its age and (lack of) pedigree. Yet another example of how lame critic scores are- this supposed nonentity was as perfect a wine as I could imagine for a Wednesday night. 2 hours after opening it was still singing, and I would love to have had another bottle to open.

I scored it a 92. My wife scored it an 87. I'm being generous and rounding up the average. I will be buying some more!
