A fine bottle of '66 LLC.

Good complete label, embossed capsule and level at Top Shoulder - see main photo.

From a large country house cellar in East Sussex. Purchased on release and undisturbed ever since.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
This may be the most successful wine produced by this estate during the decade of the sixties, although some bottles of the 1962 come close to offering as much pleasure as the 1966...The wine has always been a classic Bordeaux, with more fruit and body than many 1966s. There is a degree of austerity, but the wine's dominant characteristics include a complex, tobacco, cedar, and red currant-scented nose, medium body, excellent concentration and ripeness, and a spicy, long, moderately tannic finish. Wine Spectator
A solid, chewy wine, with focused black currant, vanilla and toast aromas and flavours. Not as long as it could be, but it's lively and still has room to grow. (2/1992)

Four stars from critic Michael Broadbent in his book Vintage Wine: "...Much liked in the early 1980s, svelte, with 'silky tannins, perfect length.' Three recent notes, one bottled by Nicolas, Paris: an impressive, hefty 'masculine' wine, hopelessly and inappropriately paired accompanying 'Santa Barbara Channel Spot Prawns with Ravioli of French Black Winter Truffles' at the Four Seasons of Los Angeles. Our generous host Stephen Kaplan should have known better, but perhaps it was the chef: they always want to show off and rarely understand wine! Most recently, on our annual winter holiday in St Bart's a perfect bottle dining with the Weisers at their beachside villa. Faultless." (Last tasted Feb. 2000)

Wines Tasted at HDH Auction (Tru - Chicago IL): Popped and poured, then tasted and re-tasted over 2+ hours. Served in 1966 horizontal. Great nose with nicely fresh (for being 50 yo) black fruit, earth and spice. Less exciting palate with less fruit, slightly firm. Held nicely for 2 hours, then shortened.

This wine certainly confirmed where Leoville-las-cases ranks among the St. Julien estates...
The wine still has considerable tannin structure and a fairly deep colour. There seems to be just enough fruit and texture to go along with the impressive structure of this wine. I would have liked to evaluate this wine several hours after decanting. Pronounced earthy character, cedar, pencil shavings...
It should last more another decade if stored properly.

An evening with Mrs. Sunshines husband... (Søerne): Very mineral, very upright, elegant wine. Served blinded, we guessed much younger, no signs of decline here. Impressive and cool.

Wine was properly stored from purchase upon release in 1970 until consumed. Level was mid-shoulder, perhaps 3/4 inch down. Placed in a cradle, not decanted. Careful not to over-swirl.
Big, full bouquet, classic cassis - jumps out of the glass. This is why one keeps and ages great Bordeaux for a special occasion. Bouquet is layers of fruit. Peaches. berries. Caramel. Almonds. Plums, Raspberries. Fraises des bois. All rushing to present themselves to the nose, trying to be first.
After 50 minutes, citrus, mango, pecan, quince, pomegranate, passion fruit, walnuts.
After 90 minutes, chocolate, caramel, pomegranate, strawberries.
After 105 minutes, honeysuckle and butterscotch.
