Community Tasting Notes (average 92.1 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 24 notes) - hiding notes with no text
Tasted by ausone03 on 12/29/2010 & rated 96 points: Very long lunch with KH, Geoff, Desmond, Alex, Richard and JJ (The Pawn): Very interesting to taste alongside a 750ml ex chateau bottle. Cloudier and clearly younger, initially not as forward and open, but developed nicely and eventually matched if not surpassed the single bottle. Wonderful stuff. (1277 views)
Tasted by ausone03 on 12/29/2010 & rated 95 points: Very long lunch with KH, Geoff, Desmond, Alex, Richard and JJ (The Pawn): Ex chateau bottle. Lovely bouquet of caramel, coconut and jammy fruits. Wonderfully open and developed. (1266 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 10/26/2010 & rated 91 points: Cheval Blanc dinner (The Ledbury, London): Warm and meaty after three very elegant wines, but taken on its own, a delightful civilised claret, fully alive (1656 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 7/29/2010 & rated 87 points: This was a bit tired. Ample leafy scents, fresh herbs, smoke, truffle, coffee, dark cherries and caramel were easy to find. Medium bodied and softly textured, this elegant, but light wine ended with caramel coated cassis flavors. There is no reason to hold this any longer. Drink up. (1943 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 5/9/2010 & rated 100 points: Decanted for one hour, this wine was perfect! A super forword, very fruity cassis nose, with hints of chocolate led to a very full bodied, mature "fruit bomb' in the finest Bordeaux sense. It was so balanced and fruity and the finish was long and lingering....It has been in my cellar for 35 years...."As good as it gets". (2413 views)
Tasted by Richard Jennings on 4/3/2010 & rated 92 points: Cheval Blanc Dinner 1970 - 2004 (Chez Sandy, San Jose, California): Slightly bricking dark red violet color; leather, mushroom, tobacco nose; leather, mushroom, earthy, tart cassis, tobacco palate with refined tannins; medium-plus finish 92+ pts. (2591 views)
Tasted by Badass on 3/8/2010 & rated 90 points: Pretty good for a 1970. Had a Bechevelle last year that would blow this away. (2440 views)
Tasted by momoisan on 1/15/2009 & rated 95 points: extremely balanced - remaining tannins blending with light acidity and still strong fruit and good length (3357 views)
Tasted by Richard Jennings on 5/23/2008 & rated 95 points: Old Pinots and Cabs - Chez Niederauer and Plumed Horse (The Plumed Horse Restaurant, Saratoga, California): Dark red violet color; sexy, black fruit nose; very tasty, tangy, delicious, youthful, black fruit and sage gravy palate; medium-plus finish 95+ pts. (3380 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 11/2/2007 & rated 90 points: From a 375ml. Had at Chez Panisse. Soft leathery but not very lively. Pleasant at first and came round as the meal wore on. Paired very well with the pork loin. A full bottle probably would have been more alive, but this was still a fun bottle. (3569 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 8/27/2007 & rated 94 points: In pristine condition, still fresh and alive notwithstanding its mid-to-top-shoulder fill. Previously I'd thought Mouton was the first growth of the vintage, but this was better. The flavor/mouthfeel of the wine is rich, black, and glossy, but none of these sensations are remotely fruit-like. The blackness isn't blackberry -- it's charred meat, tar, sun-scorched blacktop -- yet still retains the sheen and oily texture of youthful fruit, sans tannins of course, which are completely resolved. I would call the texture "buttery" except the meatiness is so evocative it almost tastes saline or cured. Maybe that's why it went down so easy with a buttered and pan-roasted Peter Luger strip steak. I wish Cheval-Blanc was cheap enough to do this every week. (4068 views)
