Description

Wine Advocate #105
Jun 1996 Robert Parker 93 Drink: 1996 - 2016
I have had nearly two cases of this wine and have consistently rated it in the low to mid-nineties. It is a classic Pauillac, more like a down-scaled version of Latour than the "poor man's Mouton" as it is often called. It reveals a fabulously saturated opaque color (only Latour can match Lynch Bages for color saturation in the 1970 vintage) with no amber at the edge. The nose offers up scents of cedar, saddle leather, smoked meat, fruitcake, tobacco, and spices. Although youthfully rich and tannic, this massive, thick wine has always been supple enough to be considered close to maturity. The finish goes on and on. The 1970 Lynch Bages can be drunk now and over the next 20 years. It is one of the greatest wines from this estate in the last 30-40 years. It remains to be seen whether or not the 1982, 1986, 1989, or 1990 will surpass it.
