Description

Robert Parker. (A Comprehensive Guide. Third Edition).
"Between the two great vintages 1961 and 1982,1970 has proved to be the best year, producing wines that were attractively rich and full of charm and complexity. They have aged more gracefully than many of the austere 1966s and seem fuller, richer, more evenly balanced, and more consistent than the hard,tannic,large-framed,but often hollow and tough 1975s".

No doubt, every bottle from a vintage as old as 1970 is likely to vary. The last two wine tasting notes on the Pontet-Canet 1970 by the professional taster Richard Jennings were as follows:-

"Browning, dark red violet color with clarity and clear meniscus;mature mushroom, mineral, and iron nose;very mature but nice mahogany, iron, cranberry, tart dried currant palate, firm tannins;medium finish" (90+ Points).

Richard Jennings (RJonWine.com 14/2/2009).
"Medium brick red color;nice mature dried cherry and cassis ;lovely, surprisingly youthful, sweet cassis, solid red fruit and tart raspberry palate;medium finish". (93 Points).
Richard Jennings (RJonWine.com 19/4/2008).

Pontet Canet was at that time owned by the Cruze family - Bordeaux négociants, and this was one of the last vintages to be aged and bottled by them in Bordeaux, a practice that died out shortly after but which had been common practice for hundreds of years. Baron Philippe de Rothschild was the first to bottle his wine at the chateau starting in the mid 1920s, Pontet Canet was the last not to be.
