Description

"The 1978 Leoville Las Cases has taken on a garnet hue with some dark ruby tints. The nose is more complex and penetrating than the flavors. The wine offers classic, mineral, lead pencil, smoky, earthy scents, with plenty of ripe fruits and none of the vegetal herbaceousness that many 1978s have begun to exhibit. The attack offers good ripeness, medium to full body, higher acidity than many more recent vintages, and considerable tannin in the hard finish.Although this wine possesses outstanding complexity, the high tannin level may never melt away" Last tasted,May 1995.
(90 Points).

Robert Parker. (Bordeaux. A Comprehensive Guide. Third Edition).

Robert Parker does not appear to have had a recent tasting of this wine, however I have located three recent tastings on CellarTracker, which appear to have a general consensus that the tannin levels have now melted away!:-

"Fantastic nose of mature claret, incredibly complex,velvety,medium-body,extremely balanced and very long. Will still go strong for at least another 5 years".
(95 Points).

1976.The Paris Challenge Re-visited. Sao Paolo,Brazil. (CellarTracker.22/3/2012).

"Opened alongside the 1993 Lafite,1970 Mouton,1979 Petrus. This was the best showing of the night.Garnet, with bricking rim.Slight hints of blackcurrant and oak on the nose.Did not expect the younger nose.Cassis, truffle, leather and cigar box, with smooth and velvety tannins.Very good balance, with medium long finish.Drinking beautifully now".
(92 Points).

(CellarTracker. 13/3/2012)

"This was a beautiful classic, mature claret. This still had a surprising amount of fruit on the nose and palate as well as fully resolved secondary flavours of tobacco and earth.Very smooth texture, long and intense.Delivers everything you'd expect from a mature Bordeaux (and really makes you wonder why you'd buy 2010 en primeur for 2-3x the price of the back vintages)".
(94 Points).
