Description

Robert Parker believes that La Mission Haut Brion's wines are the quality of a First Growth Bordeaux. He also believes that this was one of the best wines in the 1979 Bordeaux vintage.
The vines are planted to 50% Cabernet Sauvignon,40% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc.

Some tasting notes on the 1979 La Mission Haut Brion from Robert Parker:-

"In 1979 a number of strikingly good flavorful, rich wines have emerged from appellations, such as Margaux,Graves, and Pomerol".
"In the bountiful year of 1979,La Mission made a wonderfully elegant, surprisingly concentrated wine that stylistically resembles the 1971.While it lacks the extraordinary depth and concentration that La Mission is capable of achieving in great years, such as 1982 or 1978,the 1979 is still a very fine wine".
(91 Points).

Robert Parker. (Bordeaux.A Comprehensive Guide. Third Edition).

"A strong effort from La Mission, the 1979 retains its healthy dark ruby/purple color. It offers a spicy, mineral, and cassis-scented bouquet, medium to full-body,ripe,concentrated,muscular flavors, and a long finish. While drinking well, the complexity and huge, penetrating fragrance of a top Graves have yet to emerge.I would opt for drinking it over the next 15-20 years".
(90 Points).

Robert Parker. (The Wine Advocate. #88. August 1993).

However,a recent tasting note on the 1979 La Mission Haut Brion on CellarTracker suggests that the wine has now reached its apogee for peak drinking:-

""Ian A's Greatest Hits of the 1970s": Immaculate bottle. All of the three 1979s were perfect on the night (Cheval Blanc and Haut Brion also). Intense,gravelly,smoky-filled and tobacco.Sublime".
(95 Points).

CellarTracker. (24/11/2015).
