Description

Good level, poor label.

At some stage in the last 40 years a neighbouring bottle has seeped onto the label of this bottle - see photos. Although the contents have not been altered a jot by this unfortunate event, you may want to reach for the decanter...

92 points James Suckling
The 1979 vintage is a historical favourite of mine just because a number of pretty wines were made, such as Haut-Brion and Cos d’Estournel, and Bordeaux lovers completely forgot the year. Last night’s bottle was gorgeous still. It was so “clarety” as the British might say. It was fresh and crisp for a red with lots of character on the nose, from lead pencil to berries to spices. It was full-bodied still with firm tannins and a light, refined and delicate finish of currants, and hints of fresh herbs like lemon grass. (6/2016)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Undoubtedly a top success for the vintage, Pichon Lalande's 1979 exhibits a dark garnet colour with some amber at the edge. It offers a fragrant, cedary, roasted herb, and cassis-scented nose. Rich, with medium body, well-integrated tannin, and some acidity, this is the quintessentially elegant style of Bordeaux that is found nowhere else in the world. (RP) (1/1998)

91 points, Neal Martin's Wine Journal: "Tasted at the Chateau. This has a deep garnet core. The nose has a deepness to it, a decayed richness that is very enticing, and a decayed, slightly leafy richness. Cooked meats, allspice a lot of cedar. Beautiful. The palate is very finely balanced and the tannins are showing so much finesse. There seems to be a lot of Merlot here, but such a silky texture that this might be the most alluring of all the late-1970s vintages. It has a lacy finish, slightly leafy with vestiges of richness underneath. It becomes spicier with time, very smooth and harmonious and yet returning after an hour it is running out of breath and lost its precociousness, so I would refrain from decanting or allowing too much aeration." (09/2009) This is the second vintage made by May Eliane Lencquesaing, and it is delicious. Superb elegance and breed.
