Description

The lot consists of two bottles of 1981 Claret:-

One bottle of 1981 Chateau Pavie St.Emilion Grand Cru Classe.
One bottle of 1981 Chateau St.Pierre Sevaistre (St.Julien).Since 1982 known as Chateau St.Pierre 4eme Cru Classe.

The 1981 vintage in Bordeaux suffered somewhat by being succeeded by 1982,one of the greatest vintages of the century. However, both the above 1981 clarets appear to have performed excellently and should at least match their 1982 wines in quality.Just one UK retailer is currently selling Chateau Pavie 1981 for over £200 per bottle, but the 1981 St.Pierre Sevaistre could prove to be just as good (or even better!).

"Purchased by a good friend on release here in New York, both the Cos D'Estournel 1981 and the Pavie 1981 are decidedly at peak but based on these bottles there’s no need to fear the reaper. As might be expected, the Pavie is more dramatic in character, but still showing the restraint that’s been typical of the ‘81s since release, offering a haunting, floral- and spice-dominated bouquet and plush, seamless plum and cherry flavors. Like the Cos,it’s fully mature but there’s no sign of undue fatigue, either. In both cases, pretty remarkable for 34 year-old wines from a vintage that’s now been mostly forgotten, but not by me".
(91 Points).

Josh Reynolds. (Vinous 2015).

A Cellartracker tasting note on the 1981 St.Pierre Sevaistre:-

"Lively, bricking red;fragrant, mature nose with crushed fruit and cedar, slight medicinal hint;rounded, creamy and seductive, nice weight, ripe acidity;good length elegant finish. Harmonious and classy, could almost be a 1982!"
(92 Points).

Xavier Auerbach. (Cellartracker. 16/12/2001).

The above tasting notes are echoed by Robert Parker, who rated the 1981 St.Pierre Sevaistre better than the 1982 (87 Points):-

"A terribly underrated property in St.Julien,St.Pierre tends to produce a big, hefty, beefy style of wine with great colour and wonderful richness,if somewhat lacking in finesse and charm.
The 1981,one of the true great successes of the vintage,is impressively coloured, with great depth of fruit and richness that is rather a surprise for a 1981".
(89 Points).

Robert Parker. (The Wine Buyer's Guide. 1988).
