Description

This is a classic Leoville Poyferre as well as a backward 1982.Super concentrated, extremely tannic, and a decade away from reaching its plateau of full maturity. The 1982 is enormously concentrated, opaque ruby/purple-colored wine.Although it offers sweet, jammy fruit,it remains closed but not out of balance. This wine possesses immense body, plenty of glycerin and sweet tannin, and a long finish.A massive example of Leoville Poyferre,it requires another 8-10 years of cellaring and should last through the first 3 decades of the next century.Shrewd buyers should look to the auction market(there is a tendancy for this wine, even in a great vintage like 1982 to be overlooked)to snatch up this wine. 93+ Points. Last tasted--September 1995.

Robert Parker(Bordeaux. Third Edition)

Parker has since upgraded the Leoville Poyferre in a recent tasting:-

The 1982 Leoville Poyferre is a great wine,no doubt, because of the vintage, rather than the wine-making at the time.A brilliant effort,it boasts a dense purple color as well as a sweet, flowery bouquet, revealing plenty of creme de cassis, plum, and cherry notes, stunning concentration,a boatload of power, sweet tannins(the sweetest and easiest to taste amongst the St Juliens),and a long finish.Although close to full maturity,it has at least 20-25 years of life remaining. 95 Points.

Robert Parker. (Wine Advocate---June 2009)

Recent tastings of the 1982s continue to suggest that the top wines of the Northern Medoc need another 5-10 years of cellaring. Most of the best wines seem largely unevolved since their early days in cask. They have fully recovered from the bottling and display the extraordinary expansive, rich, glycerin and extract laden palates, which should these wines well over the next 10-20 years.
