A pair from each bank from the more than excellent 1986 vintage.

Both from a well maintained and cool private cellar near Lewes, East Sussex.

Château TROPLONG MONDOT St Emilion Grand Cru Classé
Good level at Base of Neck, good complete and clean label and chateau embossed capsule.

Starting to become a bit more attenuated in the finish, but still very pleasingly perfumed, with notes of dusty earth, herbs, black cherries, tobacco, and licorice, this medium-bodied wine is behaving more like a Medoc than a typical St.-Emilion.

Château FONBADET - Pauillac.
Level 'In Neck', good complete and clean label and good embossed capsule.
There very few non-classified estates in the Pauillac appellation but Chateau Fonbadet is one.
An estate of 15 hectares north of the village of Saint-Lambert, its history goes back through the mists of time to the mid 1700s.
Planted with 60% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot, 15% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot.

The 1986 Fonbadet is certainly the best wine made at this potentially excellent vineyard since the 1982. There is abundant chewy fruit, noticeable muscle and tannin, and impressive length. The wine should come into its own by the early nineties, but last 10-12 years thereafter. Given the extract levels this wine can possess, an elevated use of new oak casks at this property might prove beneficial.
