Description

Great fills into neck on both of these classic Clarets. The 1986s were renowned for their tannic depth and retain vestiges of their youth in terms of their relative age.

Conditions of label and foil on the Figeac are nigh on perfect. The Haut Bages Liberal shows a small damp stain to the label and the BB&R shipping slip.

Reviews are mixed for the Figeac, no other Chateau seems to divide opinion as much - not enough Merlot for the St Emilion purists, too much Cabernet Franc for the Left bank afficiandos - instead it is a remarkably singular terroir-driven expression that reflects the vision of Thierry Manoncourt for over 50 years. I have no reason to suspect this will be anything other than a thrilling example for fans of Figeac.

HBL, by contrast, a 5th growth from Pauillac, is a solid, classic 'gentleman's club' claret. Possibly a bit long in the tooth for my liking but others will find its cedary bouquet excatly what they long for in a Bordeaux.
