Description

On 1st April 1999,Tom Cannavan (Wine-Pages.com) held a vertical tasting of older Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle wines:-

"Though vintage variations were clear, and some examples displayed mostly primary fruit, others mostly tertiary aromas of earth, spice and game, there was a distinct family resemblance. I was particularly impressed by the medium-bodied finesse of most of these wines, especially once they have been given at least 6 or 7 years of bottle age. They are delightful food wines (as was confimed when we did the whole thing again with dinner after the formal tasting). The legendary power of Hermitage is displayed in youth, but with ageing this evolves into a savoury, complex, sometimes ethereal array of aromas and flavours".

His tasting note for the 1987 Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle:-

"Some age, with browning, paler crimson colour. Fresh nose, blackcurrant and raspberry fruit. Much lighter style, but some blackcurrant and coffee-bean aromas. Surprisingly grippy but with fine fruit. Rich, spicy oak too and good length. This is a lighter vintage, but is drinking really well for that".

A more recent tasting note on Cellartracker:-

"Brick to garnet red with some ageing. The cork almost soaked through but healthy.
Started out rather barnyardy on the nose, but that effect did partly air off. Fruit still perfectly alive. Herbaceousness, graphite, leather, spices, thyme and some floral/perfumy notes as well.
Medium bodied and dry with smoothened chewy tannins. Well balanced by acidity. Some cedar-like oak, vegetal notes as well as some meatiness. Long aftertaste with graphite, perfumy liquorice and hints of chocolate.
Drinking amazingly well at the moment but certainly has years left also. Truly enjoyable - wish I had some more".

AVP. (Cellartracker. 5/5/2010).

According to Winesearcher, the 1987 Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle has been retailing recently at an average price of £136 (ex tax) per bottle.
