Yellow-gold colour, superb nose, rich luscious fruit with distinct but restrained botrytis character (penicillin, fungussy oranges), lovely depth of rich and complex fruit on the palate, some burnt sugar character, sweet and luscious but perfectly in balance, poised, long lingering finish with the acidity and slight bitterness provided by noble rot, lovely wine at its peak though will hold for ages, slips down a treat says the wife...

Ex-cellar bottle served at Chateau Coutet. The ’88 Coutet has a pale hue considering its age. The nose I find rather simple viz-à-viz the ’89 with dried honey, beeswax, barley sugar and quince, perhaps a little subdued, though it opens after 30 minutes to offer a redeeming floral aroma. The palate is much better: vibrant on the entry with hints of spice and marmalade. Very pure with notes of mango, dried nectarine, jasmine and stem ginger. Drink now-2020. Tasted April 2010.
