Description

From a well maintained and cool private cellar near Lewes, East Sussex comes this very fine fifth growth known to all amateurs of fine Pauillac.
Level just into the neck, a good clean label and chateau embossed capsule.

Robert Parker The Wine Advocate
This vintage has turned out better than initially expected. Still somewhat austere, the 1988 has reached full maturity. Deep garnet/ruby with a cedary bouquet intermixed with currants, earth, and compost, this medium-bodied wine has noticeable richness and depth, as well as some firm tannins. Anticipated maturity: Now-2009.

Some rather more recent notes from Cellartracker:

1988 Red Bordeaux, with Richard Brazier (Handford Wines, London): Good dark colour as with all of our 88s this evening. Savoury, light fruit, light spice and light herby nose. Mild nose. No secondary elements at all. Classic Bordeaux, old school feel good firm tannin, good fruit. Has a roundness to start in and a balance and its only on the finish that the tannin makes an out of tune appearance. Again much lkie the Ducru and Léoville Las Cases before this is to forget for 5 yrs minimum. Good life ahead although not sure how much better it will get. Nicol 90 / Andreas 92+

Still dark red. Typically for the vintage: a tight and narrow bouquet, followed by good acidity. The first to come to my mind was another similar 88 that I tasted a few months earlier; Calon Segur. Taste of mushrooms, earth and minerals. Later on came some caramel and malt. Oak in other words. Which I feel should have been better integrated in such a mature wine. But, overall a positive experience.

Opened up, decanted for 2 hours. Had it on Christmas Eve with elk tenderloin and a chantarelle sauce. On the nose initially some barnyard, later cigar box, lead pencil and leather. On the palate, smooth with some acidity and fruit still left. On the whole ripe and ready. Drink up or keep for max 5 more years.
