Feb 1997 Robert M. Parker, Jr. 89
Both the 1989 and 1990 wines scored slightly lower than in previous tastings. In contrast to the 1990, the 1989 Beychevelle, which usually performs better than it did in the recent tasting, is an elegant, medium-bodied wine with soft tannin, copious quantities of ripe, herb-tinged, blackcurrant fruit, some evidence of toasty oak, and a generous, velvety-textured finish. It appears to be evolving quickly, and can be drunk now as well as over the next 15 years.

In 1989 Beychevelle produced a compellingly elegant wine that rivals their 1986 and 1982, the two other superstars made at this beautiful estate during the decade of the eighties. An exquisite bouquet of super-ripe fruit, vanillin, flowers, and licorice is followed by a delicious array of flavours that swell and expand on the palate. Rich and concentrated, yet also suave and graceful, the 1989 Beychevelle is extremely long, with a hefty dosage of high but soft tannins.

Blackberry with a raspberry backdrop; silky and nicely textured; soft integrated tannins and lean light cherry finish.

You could do worse than have a perfectly mature Beychevelle and rack of lamb. The nose is tobacco, cherries, and olive brine. The palate still has plenty of fruit, tobacco, some olive and chocolate on the finish, and high acidity. Lovely wine at the dinner table

At this point there's going to be a lot of bottle variation, but my experience of this wine is that it's firmly in its peak drinking window. Tons of dark cherry fruit with all those classic mature Bordeaux aromatics (charcoal, tobacco, seashell, blood, spices). Needs 4 hours to unwind but it's all there and really not tired at all. Best examples have at least another 10 years before making a slow descent. This is more 2nd growth is quality, probably owing to the fabulous vintage. Still primary and big enough to pair with Lamb. Great effort.

A pop and pour. Delicious mature claret, superb nose along with sweet silky tannins. Cherry notes, fragrant and delicate but with a slightly short finish. I have not drunk this in quite a while and am now resolved to drink the last few bottles quite soon.
