Description

The lot consists of three bottles from the outstanding 1989 Bordeaux vintage:-

One bottle of 1989 Chateau La Lagune (Haut Medoc).
One bottle of 1989 Chateau Lafleur-Gazin (Pomerol).
One bottle of 1989 Chateau Beau-Site (St.Estephe).

"We believe that 1989 is the greatest modern vintage for Bordeaux and close in quality to the legendary vintages of 1961 and 1945.That's why we rate it 98 points overall. So many exciting wines were made in 1989 that its difficult to go wrong when you buy a bottle. We recommend that you buy as much '89 as you can afford, since another classic year might not come along for a long time".

James Suckling. (The Wine Spectator.15/10/1994).

"I have always enjoyed the 1989 La Lagune. At first,I thought it was marginally superior to the 1990,but they are essentially equivalent in quality, although the 1989 possesses less fat and a more ruggedly tannic structure. The color is a healthy dark ruby, and the wine offers up a smoky, sweet vanillin,jammy,berry-scented nose with aromas of weedy tobacco. The wine is medium bodied, with excellent purity and richness and gobs of red and black currant fruit, nicely dosed with new oak.The wine's grip is more noticeable than in the 1990,and the finish is more attenuated but still impressively long.Interestingly, the 1990 seems more evolved (or at least more drinkable) than the more obviously tannic 1989. Anticipated maturity: Now-2012. Last tasted,September 1997.
(90 Points).

Robert Parker. (Bordeaux.A Comprehensive Guide. Third Edition).

"This is probably the best wine produced at Beau-Site since their 1982.Deep ruby/purple in color, with a moderately intense bouquet of superripe cassis fruit, minerals, and spicy oak, this medium-bodied,moderately tannic, concentrated wine has more power and opulence than most vintages of Beau-Site".

Robert Parker. (Bordeaux. A Comprehensive Guide. Third Edition).

The Chateau Lafleur Gazin comes from the J.P. Moueix stable of Chateau Petrus fame.Having spoken to Christian Moueix on several tasting occasions in his offices in Libourne,he maintained that the 1989 grape quality in Pomerol was one of the best years ever in his memory.
