Description

This wine remains backward and unformed, especially for a 1989,but it reveals a nearly opaque purple color and a sweet, pure nose of black
raspberries, cassis, licorice, violets, and minerals nicely dosed with high-quality new oak. There is great fruit on the palate, layers of richness, medium to full body, and fabulous harmony and precision.Given its superb intensity and elegant personality,it is a dazzling example of winemaking. The wine's finish goes on for at least 35-40 seconds.Unlike many 1989 Pomerols, this wine requires 2-3 more years of cellaring;it should keep through the first 15+ years of the next century. Last tasted,November 1996.
(94+ Points).

Robert Parker. (Bordeaux. A Comprehensive Guide. Third Edition).

Robert Parker slightly upgraded his rating on this wine in his later Bordeaux book:-

Possibly the finest La Fleur de Gay made, this rich, very large-scaled,tannic wine has a compelling nose of cassis, licorice, white flowers, minerals, and other sorts of black fruits, along with some subtle new oak.Full-bodied,with great delineation, purity, and dazzling concentration and intensity, this is a fabulous example of La Fleur de Gay and it is a wine that seems capable of lasting another two decades. Anticipated maturity: now-2020.Last tasted,December 2002.
(95 Points).

Robert Parker. Bordeaux. (The Comprehensive Guide. Fourth Edition).

I have located the two most up-to-date tastings of this wine on CellarTracker:-

"Smoke, truffle, cherry, floral and chocolate aromas kept your nose interested in what was in the glass.Medium/full bodied, with soft, silky tannins and velvet textures. The wine is fully mature and delivers a delicious, earthy, black raspberry Pomerol tasting experience".
(93 Points).
CellarTracker (3/2/2012).

"Brick red rim, with just a touch of orange - exquisite nose of chocolatey tobacco with just a residue of some retained plum/cherry fruit.Full, rich mouthfeel with superbly integrated soft, velvet tannins - the only flaw is lowish acidity, with a flat mid-mouth - long 20-30 second finish - to re-iterate a previous note "all you ever want in an aged Pomerol".".
