Description

For sale, one bottle of 1989 La Tache. From a lot of six that I purchased at auction 10 years ago and stored at my Lay & Wheeler storage since.

I had intended to sell half of them but they were excellent so I drank an extra one.

When I pulled the last two for sale, I noticed that the cork was ¬7mm depressed.

The fill is great, the color is great, the label is great. But the cork is depressed.

I took off the top of the capsule to be able to see if there is anything obviously wrong with the cork. There isn t. There are no signs of seepage etc. (See photo). I have saved the top of the capsule in case the buyer wants it.

Again, all of the bottles were stored in the same place and this is the only one with any issue. All of the other bottles looked great, and the ones that I drank were excellent.

Still, I ve set a very low reserve price relative to the £2600 ex VAT price at which this vintage retails, to reflect the depressed cork.

Shipping is £17 ex insurance to mainland UK, or you can pick up the bottle in N5.

I accept bank transfer or PayPal (please add 3% for PayPal).

(Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche Grand Cru Red) (opened from personal storage). For two decades this very much seemed stuck in a time capsule as it was evolving glacially but just in the last few years full maturity has finally arrived. The hallmark spice of a great La Tâche is present in spades with outstanding aromatic complexity that includes plenty of secondary fruit development but at this point, no sous bois. There is excellent concentration to the velvety and wonderfully rich flavors that display the same wonderful depth of the nose, all wrapped in a mouth coating, delicious and hugely long finish. This is a wine that I have had any number of times but this most recent bottle is easily the best that I have ever tried.

(DRC La Tache) 1989 DRC La Tache? Ok, why not. Any night where a bottle of La Tache is opened is officially special. Its nose was very perfumed and open, although there was some dirty underneath, one of the issues with ’89. The palate was much more expressive than the nose with its rich, meaty and earthy personality. Its finish was thick and showed me its peacock tail. Insert your own joke here (94).

April 12, 2019 - Good but not a great la tache. Opened up with more time in the glass. Dark fruit driven. Got the DRC structure but missing the La Tache sparkle. Still young. The 89 Richebourg outshined it tonight.

February 21, 2019 - Ficofi from Mathusalem- disappointing, dull and unexciting. Doesnt have LT feel.

December 4, 2018 - From Mathusalem not showing all that well. Fruit in background only and seeming a bit short. Only hint of LT on nose.

December 1, 2018 - Ken s 60th Birthday (Smyth - Chicago, IL): 89/95/96 La Tache Flight. Vibrant ruby red color. Holy hell, this has incredibly intense aromas of red cherry, florals, asian 5-spice and earth tones. Palate has layer upon layer of flavor. Still rather youthful and rich. A rare treat.

December 1, 2018 - Ken s 60th Birthday (Smyth and The Loyalist - Chicago IL): Intense spice driven start with ripe red and black cherry throughout. Good concentration from start-to-finish, but especially robust on its finish. Great length, also finishing with rich spice. A wine that keeps getting better with age.

BRADE WROTE:
November 4, 2018 - Like the bottle of 91 DRC GE drunk side by side, this 89 La Tache was in good if not pristine shape. Nonetheless, it drank well, and I find this vintage good if not inspirational.

Sorry, this is maybe obvious, but please see the photos for the condition of the cork. As you can see it's quite depressed but no signs of seepage.
