Description

Stephen Tanzer 94 points.
"(75% tempranillo, 15% garnacha and 10% graciano and mazuelo) Light, vivid red. Deep cherry and blackcurrant on the nose, with suave vanilla and potpourri qualities adding complexity. Round, fleshy red and dark berry flavors are impressively concentrated but not heavy. Gains strength with air and finishes on a sappy blackcurrant note, with excellent spicy persistence. I marginally prefer the finesse of the Bosconia today but would bet on this one aging longer."

"This mature red shows a light brick color, with delicate aromas of spice, dried fruit and rose. Supple and still lively, offering flavors of dried berry, tea, vanilla and spice. This whispers rather than shouts, but has distinctive character. For fans of the traditional style. Drink now. 416 cases made."

The Lopez de Heredia family owns this ultra-traditional bodega which farms 170 hectares of vineyards, and very little has changed since it was founded in 1877. The vineyards are planted with the region’s classic grapes, including tempranillo, garnacha, graciano and mazuelo for the reds, viura and malvasia for the white wines. Everything here is done by hand, from vineyard to bottle, but it is the barrel ageing that defines the captivating style of these extraordinary Riojas. Reds, whites and even the intriguing rosado spend years maturing calmly in the cobwebby cellars. This endows the wines with a certain ethereal quality and subtleness. These are the antithesis of modern, fruit-driven wines resting their quality on secondary and tertiary flavours, balanced by a silky sweetness and understated intensity.

Excellent provenance and condition. Cellared in a temperature controlled wine warehouse since release.
