Description

Two perfect bottles of this First Growth St Emilion.

Until recently cellared in an incredible Midlands private cellar. Absolutely first class cellaring.

Robert Parker's three notes hereunder:

Feb 1997 Robert M. Parker, Jr. 88 Drink: 2002 - 2018
As readers may have surmised from previous comments regarding Clos Fourtet, this estate is quickly emerging from a moribund period. It is a St.Emilion to keep an eye on. An impressive saturated purple colour indicates a wine of strength and power. In the mouth, it exhibits the vintage's high tannin level, but the tannins are balanced by layers of ripe cassis fruit, attractive smoky elements, and fine glycerin and length. This is a forceful, impressively constituted, potentially outstanding Clos Fourtet that needs 3-4 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2018.

Apr 1996 Robert M. Parker, Jr. (86-87) Drink: 1996 - 2006
Clos Fourtet's 1994 exhibits an impressively-saturated, dark ruby colour, followed by a sweet, expansive nose of toasty new oak, smoke, and ripe, jammy black-cherries. Some tannin is discernible in this medium-bodied wine, which has fine concentration, but a surprisingly brisk finish. Although approachable now, it should keep for a decade. The wine seems to have less fat and intensity than it exhibited last year.
All of the wines in this segment were tasted between March 19 and March 28 in Bordeaux. Most of the important wines from both the 1994 and 1995 vintages were tasted three separate times during my ten-day stay in Bordeaux.

Apr 1995 Robert M. Parker, Jr. (87-89) Drink: 1998 - 2010
Given Clos-Fourtet's strong effort in 1990, as well as this 1994 that will ultimately eclipse the 1990, I believe readers should recognize the re-emergence of this estate as a serious provider of high quality wine. The 1994's saturated purple colour is accompanied by extremely rich, sweet Merlot scents (jammy black-cherries and herbs). This full-bodied, tannic wine, with an unctuous, sweet mid-palate, requires 3-4 years of cellaring; it should age well for 15+ years.
